Queanbeyan - Now It's Nifty's Turn

I received an email from a Queanbeyan trainer (who shall remain nameless) which said in past "you seen the melbourne results yesterday you can train a good horse on the Queanbeyan track."

The email set me to thinking. If world champion sprinter Takeover Target was the only Gr 1 winner to ever come out of Queanbeyan - you could say "every dog has his day" - but of course he wasn't.

The first Gr 1 winner to be trained on the hilly and tight circuit was outstanding sprinter Wayne's Bid, trained by Frank Cleary, which won an AJC Galaxy.

Of course, Frank went on to repeat the dose when Catbird won the Golden Slipper for him - after having gone within a half length of winning the Slipper a few years earlier when Clan O'Sullivan was run down close home by Burst.

But back to the email which renminded me of yesterday's race results - and, for me (being a bushie through and through) the highlight of my day - when Karuta Queen severely beat up her rivals in winning the Gr 3 race for three years olds.

Yesterday's win elevated her in to the "corker" class. What a bonny little filly she is?

When she booted on the turn yesterday and put three on her rivals I was off the lounge, on my feet and rode harder than Tommy (Berry) for the last 200.

The win signalled that Karuta Queen had really arrived as a serious racehorse - and Neville "Nifty" Layt - the filly's trainer, and his wife Barbara, deserve the ride they are now on with this filly.

All the punduts wanted to knock her yesterday. There was a strong train of thought among the "professionals" (whoever they are) that Karuta Queen would not run a strong 1200 metres in good company - despite her having won a Magic Millions over that course earlier this year - and the knock was "big."

Track Holds Key To Cox Plate

I suppose the track and the weather hold the key to the Cox Plate meeting at Moonee Valley today - but gee it is a high quality card even though we have a few races that look pre-determined like Manwanui in the Vase and Black Caviar in the sprint.

Looking for value I am going to have something on SILVER GRECIAN in the Crystal Mile. I think he is a pretty fair horse and his first up run in Australia was very good. I expect he will be hard to beat today.

I may have lost the plot as Somepin Anypin will be very short at Rosehill, but watch out the real LEICA LARRIKIN does not go to the races today. If he does he will be charging home and I give him a good chance. The quinella could be a great nap bet in the race at value. I am also pretty keen on RUSSIAN JAR in race seven - I just have a hunch that the firm track and the engagement of Rodney Quinn will enable this horse to produce his best today. He has been a bookies pal for a while this horse - but everyone seems to have jumped off now and that can only be a bonus.

The Eagle Farm meeting is huge in numbers but pretty ordinary in quality but I am pretty keen on SOMNAMBULIST in race six on the card.

It is a good day to play the quaddies and sit at home and enjoy a great raceday.

Geelong Cup - Will We See Another International Winner

Today's Geelong Cup could be described as make or break for both the international runners in the race, French horse Dunaden and Bauer.

Bauer, who won the Geelong Cup (joining other internationals such as Media Puzzle and Americain to have won the race in recent years) before going on to finish a short half head second to Viewed in the 2008 Melbourne Cup, was very good late in the Herbert Power at his first run back in Australia this campaign.

It does not look to be the strongest renewal of the race in recent years - so one would think both the imports would put paid to any cup claims should they not perform exceptionally well today.

Looking for the best on the program was hard, but perhaps each way FRESHWATER JOURNEY in race four could be the way to go. I expect him to bounce and be forward today as opposed to his last start when he was well back and failed to fire.

The Kenso meeting at Randwick looks pretty thin fare but I am keen on BARIGAN BOY in race five. He does look very hard to beat today and he will be value. Tonight they have al all weather track meeting at Shatin which looks very damned hard. Perhaps the best on the card could be the Andreas Schutz-trained LUCKY TYCOON in race four.

Our special in Wild Rumours got the money at Queambeyan on Monday taking it to five of the last eight best bets to get home.
